Workshop Orientation and Spiritual Grounding
Setting the atmosphere matters in gospel.
This opening establishes the room as sacred ground. Through prayer, calland- response, and light hand clapping, participants are invited into the tradition where gospel is learned by participation.
Gospel technique is inseparable from spiritual posture and communal engagement.
The South Carolina Gospel Sound and Its Roots
This section explores the distinct characteristics of South Carolina gospel and coastal Black church worship, including ring shout culture, congregational singing, rhythm-driven praise, and the balance between structure and freedom. Regional worship practices shape vocal phrasing, rhythmic feel, and emotional delivery.
Breath, Body, and Spiritual Posture in Gospel Singing
Gospel singing begins in the body before it reaches the voice. This segment focuses on breath support connected to declaration, testimony, and spiritual intent, with grounding exercises that link breath to emotion, scripture, and purpose.
Tone Production and Gospel Color Participants explore the tonal palette of gospel music including warmth, grit, cry, and clarity. Attention is given to controlled vocal texture, dynamic contrast, and emotional shading with vocal health and sustainability.
Rhythm, Feel, and Hand Clapping as Technique
Rhythm is taught as embodied knowledge.
Hand clapping functions as a core teaching tool to internalize time, subdivision, and groove, reinforcing ensemble awareness and communal responsibility.
Call and Response, Ad-Libbing, and Vocal Conversation
This segment focuses on the conversational nature of gospel singing, developing listening skills, leadership awareness, and spontaneous expression that serves the collective sound.
Learning the Sound: Building a Gospel Choir Experience
Participants learn selected gospel songs designed to recreate the four walls of a gospel choir.
Focus is placed on parts, phrasing, dynamics, blend, and the emotional arc that carries worship and collective power.
